The organization is active in 132 countries and territories worldwide focuses on abandoned, destitute and orphaned children requiring family-based child care.

Typically, a SOS family consists of a SOS mom and 6 to 8 girls and boys of different ages living together as brothers and sisters. A SOS mother's job is to fulfill a mother's job responsibilities including household works, children's daily life arrangement (food, clothing, daily routines etc.), children education, etc., to have those orphaned children growing up happily and healthily with maternal love.

The children are also supporting themselves through sellings of children-made embroideries and paintings.
